‘‘CULTURAL HERITAGE TOURISM AND DESTINATION SUSTAINABILITY AN INTEGRATIVE REVIEW OF RECENT RESEARCH’’

Abstract
Cultural heritage tourism is an increasingly significant tool to link cultural heritage conservation to sustainable destination development. This integrative study aims to provide a synthesis of recent research on the conceptual foundations, emerging trends, contributions, challenges, management strategies and future directions of cultural heritage tourism. The study emphasizes that tangible and intangible heritage resources make a contribution towards destination sustainability through employment creation, development of local livelihoods, strengthening cultural identity, environmental conservation, and enhancement of destination competitiveness. Current trends like smart systems for the management of tourism, artificial intelligence, geographic information systems, virtual reality, augmented reality, digital interpretation and community-based tourism are revolutionizing the management of heritage and its visitors. However, the challenges of overtourism, carrying capacity, commercialisation, loss of authenticity, climate change, lack of funds for conservation, poor government and unequal tourism benefits remain high. A conceptual framework is suggested that integrates cultural heritage resources with community involvement, sustainable governance strategies, environmental protection, technological innovations and responsible visitation management. All these enabling factors have an impact on visitors' satisfaction, cultural preservation, economic resilience, ecological protection and long-term sustainability of the destination. The study suggests that adaptive planning, multi-stake governance, measurable sustainability indicators, equitable benefit sharing and better government-government, government-community and government-heritage institution-researcher-tourism business collaboration are essential for effective heritage tourism. These measures used to ensure the sustainable development of tourism and the long-term conservation of cultural and environmental assets at the destination.
